When I was around 10 or 11 I used to go to Joe Aitchison's boxing gym at 209 Dalmarnock Road. Access was through a close, up a stair, then down a stair into the back court where the gym was located.
It was absolutely marvellous, and Joe would never allow any boy to take a beating. We would start off doing some training moves, under Joe's watchful eye, and then into the ring for some sparring.
After that was some punchbag, skipping, shadow boxing or speed ball work, then a hot shower.
To get there from Camlachie, I got a 61/62 to Bellgrove then a 22 or 46 to Dalmarnock Road. I loved my time there, but like many things at that age, I drifted away from it.
Boxing is a great sport for self discipline, and I recommend it to anyone.
Joe was a lovely man, who would arrive to open up the gym, dressed with suit, coat and dickie-bow tie. He lived in Rutherglen and went on to live to a ripe age.

tommy gilmour's place was in olympia street, peter. I ran about there when i was a kid, did a bit of training, went to the cafe in james st every night for two bottles of lemonade and a bottle of bitter lemon for tommy gilmour and his mates' booze. I was only eleven and i sparred with chic calderwood and henry hank from detroit who was over to fight cowboy mccormack, i thought i was going to be world champion, silly bugger.

I remember many years ago wee Joe turned up at the gym one afternoon dressed as smart as ever,he changed into his training gear and carefully hung up his good clothes and went into the gym where Derry Treanor and Cowboy MaCormack were warming up. After the training session Derry and Big Cowboy were sitting having a right good laugh, when Joe came in, Derry said to him,"Joe how many fights did you have"? he replied none,i never boxed Derry said then how come you have left the house today wearing two odd shoes? He had two suede shoes on but one was a heavy brogue and the other was a light dress shoe, that was the only time i ever saw wee Joe stuck for words, this would be about 1961

Hello, I found this old thread while surfing the internet. Joe Aitchison was my father George's uncle, my grandmother Agnes's brother. We live in the US and I only visited him once, in 1971 or 72. When my dad introduced me to "Uncle Joe", I held out my hand to shake hands, and he took a swing at me! I was surprised but didnt't flinch, thinking he was testing my fortitude. Then he suddenly turned and took a swing at my little brother standing behind me, who ducked. Joe laughed, pointed at my brother, and said, "I can work with him. The older one's got no reflexes!"
I believe Joe's gym was founded by his father George Aitchson, who trained a number of European champions. My father was named after him.

Anyone got a photo of Joe. I went there with my brother Michael in the early 60's Joe was a one off, and made a big impression on anyone who met him. In '62 I was West of Scotland Champion at 9st (junior) out of Joes Gym.DBC on my vest. In the run up to the fights I had to go for sessions when I was the only young one there and met many ex and current boxers. One session I was sparring with John Caldwell( Former World Champion from Northern Ireland) who was training to get back his World Title. Could'nt lay a glove on him. What a boxer. Anyone got any photos from that era especially of Joe and ex boxers.
