Hi Paul, I remember that street well; Used to walk along Janefield street, past the Celtic park and cross Springefield road and go to Burgher street on my way to Parkhead cross. I remember there was a small shop there and the gentleman repaired watches.Perhaps you remember him. I used to go there often and speak to him and his wife. Later he had a little stall in the market in the city centre.
Amethyst.

Was the petrol station where the Post Office and Social Security was built as I cannot remember what was there before that was built...although I worked with a guy who said his grandad used to have stables there.

lived at 89 burgher st opposite Adams scrap garage, the garage went from springfield rd through to burgher st.It was next to the spare ground which they built the post office and social offices on. Used to go to the Black Cat and after it turned into the bbc studios we went from newlands school to be part of the audience for a tv show , think David Jacobs was the host. Kenifscot

Just had a thought there looking in this board. When I was at Newlands we used to cut through the sperr grun where they later built the Post Office / Social Security offices, to the dinner hall which must have been in the Church of the Nazarene ( I always thought it was a Methodist Church so I've got that wrong) and it's the same hall where I used to go to the Lifeboys on a Friday night. Thanks for the pic!
Ha ha! Another thing Ive just remembered about the garage next to the sperr grun - I threw a brick over the wall there and it hit the roof of a car on the other side! The man from the garage caught me and marched me back to the school and the Heidy - the punishment was that I had to carry the brick about for a month in my school satchel!
That sperr grun is also where they used to hold the shows towards the end of summer /autumn

Thanks Weanie ! I had another look at the Nazarene pic and it was further up toward Parkhead Cross than the Methodist Church. So it was the Methodist Church after all! ;D

I seem to recall the church on Ardgour/Burgher street became a cash and carry, am I imagining this or was it true? I remember when they knocked it down 1971-72. Its amazing that a street as small Burgher st had 3 churches at one time.

Sorry xactofluff, No idea what the Methodist Church became, I only remember it as a church. Maybe the younger keelies will remember what it was used for before it was demolished.

My family the Crawfords cane from Burgher st and I used to rollerskate on the road as it was so smooth! Another memory was one Sunday night a crowd of us from Calton Parish Church were on our way to Bunny Clark's and we were walking past Burgher St when to our dismay there was a gang "Tongs Ya Bass" coming our way. We had to run and Bunny had to lock us in and pull down the shutters! There was a lot of damage done that night to the shops in Springy Road!

Was there not a record shop in Burgher Street, just round the corner from Tollcross Road, or is my memory playing tricks with me?
Can anybody confirm.
