I was driving along Shettleston Road from the junction of Duke Street towards Shettleston / Garrowhill and I noticed the wall of what was part of Parkhead Forge.
It runs from the junction continuously to Hart Street.
Is this the longest unbroken wall in Glasgow ??

Peter you have lodged this in my mind and ever since I have been looking at walls all over the city without a break in them...did you know that when the King and Queen visited Parkhead Forge in the summer of 1914 they entered the Forge via a platform and stairs from that wall.

Is it true Pitbull that the wall around the graveyard was the dead center of Parkheed?

i couldnae tell ye where ye could be buried my granparents an maw are brigton punters and are up in riddrie, and that graveyard trotsky i,m no sure if it was the centre of the parkhead area but do know it was behind the fitba ground if ye walked up yate street i think there was a way to it , its been that long since i was anywhere near that part of glesga , but as for the wall it was a massive walk around the top of it we were often chased off it.

Never mind the jokes, to get back to the thread, strictly speaking you couldn't compare both walls as the wan in Duke street is a brick wall and if my memory serves me right the graveyard wan is stone, so baith maybe qualify in their own way, whita claim to fame fur Parkheed, the longest brick wall and the longest stone wall, and another thing if both are the longest in Glesga it stands to reason (mine) that they would be the longest in Scotland, if you don't count all the wans that are built around the sheep and coos in the countryside, dead brilliant so it is.

hey i was oot in the coiuntry side in 1972 and i was repointing a stone wall 4 miles long at a place called lawmuir i think it was a borstal or approved school, i,d get dropped off with a few bags of sand and a bag of cement a massive spot board, every few yards and left there aw day, boring eh so i spent most of my time wandering aw over the place .

I agree with Pitbull, the Parkhead Graveyard wall is the longest, you could walk along the wall from the end of Delburn st where it butted against Barrs Yard, all the way up Janefield St and right round to the Gallowgate (as far as I can remember). In the summer months when Gravie's cut he grass with scyths, we used to gather all the cut grass into a pile and jump onto it from the wall. Great fun , but don't let the Gravie's catch ye.

Fair shout Pitbull and Clansman, Janefield Cemetery probably beats Shettleston Road.
Got me wondering, are there any other cemetery walls longer ?

Aye it might be the longest but the Shettleston wan is unique in that it has little round inlets, or something similar, built into it all along its length (as far as I can remember) so it is of great artistic merit, so it's better........as far as walls go

Whit about the wall around the wumins prison in Duke street, that was some wall, solid stone, when the prison was pulled down they reduced the hight of the wall, but did it still go all around the bit where the prison used to be

I only remember the bullet hole,s in the wall doe,s anybody else? They happened in May 1921 following a gun battle between the IRA and the Glasgow Police. The IRA were trying to spring free one of their number who was in a van being transported, and a shoot out occured, resulting in a police officer being killed. I'm sure this story is on the board somewhere.
