Springbank House must be before my time, only thing I remember before the Helenvale flats got built, when I came out of the Church after the BB`s when we walked down to London Road there was a wall there, I allways thought there was a Factory behind it. cu oorwullie

F"%&/$ck Charlie Now that you`ve written that , now I remember it as the Pancake, any idea why. cu oorwullie Something to do with the big circular discs that they produced and sent to India to grind down the grain which made the bread or the chapatis...that is the legend but it is Parkheid we are dealing with here Wulli so it is probably a lie. ;D

Springfield Dye Works wur located adjacent tae the north boundary o' Springfield Hoose. Next wiz the reservoir where ah used tae catch frogs and play oan rafts. (Nae kiddin'). In my day Wullie we called it the 'Chemmy' becaus of all the hospital stuff that was dumped there. There was also the 'haunted hoose' which we all knew as the 'priest's hoose' which had a 'dare' ledge at the back which you had to walk with your back against the wall onto Springy Road. There was also a wee underground air raid shelter in the grounds which was also another dare if you were gemme enough to go and sit in it for more than five minutes. ;D

Can anyone remember the name of the small engineering works that used to be sited (1950s) in Springfield Road just past London Road on the right hand side going towards Parkhead Cross? As a wee boy I originally thought that was Parkhead Forge. I think my uncle Bobby Morrow worked there for a spell.

My granny aways said that Springfield Road was called that because of the water that used to flow along it. Could be right I suppose.

No commercial premises listed for that part of Springfield Road, so it may be that the postal address was London Road. In that case it may have been one of the following; 1323 London Road = Springfield Steel Co. or 1305 = Stead & McGavin Does that ring any bells?

Brownlee, there is a photo in the Whitby St. thread which shows the station there, but just behind it on the left you can see a factory that would be just about where you were talking about. I think somebody said it was a forge of some kind.
Brian.

I noticed today that another piece of Parkhead's industrial past has disappeared. The Springfield Wire Works, premises of Begg, Cousland & Co. have been demolished.

Good curries - bhuna, madras, vindaloo - you name it - they made it!!!! Talkin tae Charlie today we couldnae remember the name of the Indian's next to flynns. Still canae remember it bein called the Shatin (theres a Shatin near ma house but thats Chinese) Wee G1 (thats what he told us to call him) was one of the best giving us curries on "tick" Previous to that it was Flynn's big lounge and previous to that my old doctors surgery was there! Your right Gibbsy. The doctor's was there and also Bill Toye's wee joiner shop and also the fishmongers. When big Vincent Clancey had Flynn's he built the extension which was known as 'the big lounge'. It was a good venue for a couple of years and then it's popularity fell away and became 'Choo Choo' McEwan's aka Rocky's bar and diner and then and it was later opened up as an Indian restuarant and one of the guys was geewan as we used to call him a great wee guy and it was a sad day when he quit the shop because of the hassle he got from the local neds at 'the lights'. After that it was various Chinese carry out shops none of which every made much money especially when they demolised all the houses in and around Celtic Park.
